چکیده

How does the meaning of a word affect how quickly we can recognize it? Accounts of visual word recognition allow semantic information to facilitate performance but have neglected the role of modalityspecific perceptual attention in activating meaning. We predicted that modality-specific semantic information would differentially facilitate lexical decision and reading aloud, depending on how perceptual attention is implicitly directed by each task. Large-scale regression analyses showed the perceptual modalities involved in representing a word’s referent concept influence how easily that word is recognized. Both lexical decision and reading-aloud tasks direct attention toward vision, and are faster and more accurate for strongly visual words. Reading aloud additionally directs attention toward audition and is faster and more accurate for strongly auditory words. Furthermore, the overall semantic effects are as large for reading aloud as lexical decision and are separable from age-of-acquisition effects. These findings suggest that implicitly directing perceptual attention toward a particular modality facilitates representing modality-specific perceptual information in the meaning of a word, which in turn contributes to the lexical decision or reading-aloud response.

Perception and Multimodality

1 Unimodal approaches to the study of perception Sometimes you turn to look at the source of a clunk. Sometimes you see a pan on the stove and grasp its hot handle. Sometimes you smell the pepper you taste, or find a stinky dead mouse under the sink. In each case, you perceive using more than one sense. You hear the sound and see its source. You feel and see the handle. You smell and taste the ...

Does What We Want Influence What We See?

I aim to show that the content of our perceptual states depends counterfactually on the action we want to perform. Most philosophical and psychological theories of perception claim or at least assume the opposite: they conceive of perception as allpurpose: what we want to do does not influence what we see. I will argue that the content of one's perceptual state does vary as the action one is in...

Structure at the Lexical Level and Its Implications for Transfer Grammar

IN the following discussion I shall present preliminary results from an investigation of structuring within the lexicon of a language. These results suggest that in certain areas of the lexicon lexical items must be characterized in terms of the presence or absence of specific recurring lexico-semantic components. Furthermore, there seems to be some promise that correspondence between lexical i...
